Project: 3-Acre Wildflower Meadow

Location: Yorkshire, UK

Date: January 2024

About

The Project

A private estate in Yorkshire sought to transform 3 acres of neutral soil land into a vibrant wildflower meadow. The site, located on a gentle slope, presented challenges including slightly shaded areas at the lower end, which required careful species selection to ensure full seasonal impact.

The client requested a meadow that would offer long-lasting colour from late spring to early autumn, with predominant hues of purple, pink, and blue, complemented by touches of white and yellow. The overarching aim was to combine aesthetic appeal with biodiversity enhancement.

Our Contribution

What We Did

John Chambers Wildflowers supplied and adapted the Highfield mixture to meet the client’s specifications. The mix was redesigned to include additional species to extend the flowering season, and incorporated a diverse selection of native and cultivated annuals including Cornflowers, Bishop’s Flower, Coreopsis, Linaria, Cosmos, Poppies, and Mallow.

Site preparation included spraying off existing grass, rotavating the topsoil to create a fine tilth, and smoothing the surface. The seed was then drilled into the soil using a tractor at a recommended sowing rate of 3g per m². This method ensured even distribution and strong initial establishment across the full 3-acre site.

The resulting meadow has created a stunning visual display, providing a continuous bloom from the end of May through to the end of September. The combination of species ensures layered flowering with peaks of colour throughout the season, even in partially shaded areas.

The meadow also supports wildlife and pollinators, contributing to local biodiversity, and has become a landmark feature on the estate

“We are delighted with the results. We have a vast area of stunning flowers which are in bloom from the end of May until the end of September. The longevity of the flowering impact is remarkable and is a joy to see.”
