SFI & Countryside Stewardship Schemes Support

Whether you’re preparing for the reopening of SFI or exploring Countryside Stewardship options, John Chambers Wildflowers provides expert guidance, tailored wildflower seed mixes, and practical support to help you meet scheme requirements while enhancing biodiversity and farm resilience.

Sustainable Farming Incentive

What is the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme?

The Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) is a key land management scheme launched in 2022 (under post-Brexit framework) that pays farmers for actions that improve soil health, biodiversity, and support nature recovery and sustainable food production. The scheme is designed to be flexible, with farmers choosing environmental actions to suit their farming model.

The SFI scheme will reopen in June 2026 for smaller farms (to be defined by Defra) and those without current Environmental Land Management (ELM) agreements. From September 2026, the scheme will be open to all farmers.

Applications are open all-year-round with payments made quarterly.

Sustainable Farming Incentive

What does the Sustainable Farming Incentive scheme aim to achieve?

SFI schemes aim to support sustainable food production while enhancing soil health, reward farms for delivering public goods (habitat creation, resilient landscapes, clean water etc), and contribute to the UK’s biodiversity recovery and net-zero emissions targets.

How can John Chambers help?

John Chambers Wildflowers can support farmers entering SFI’s by:

  • Supplying native wildflower seed mixes ideal for habitat creation, buffer strips, and low-input grassland
  • Designing bespoke mixes with farmers that align with SFI objectives and site-specific requirements
  • Offering technical advice to ensure chosen wildflower mixes are appropriate for soil type, location, and the specific SFI action to be undertaken

Countryside Stewardship

What is the Countryside Stewardship (CS) scheme?

Countryside Stewardship (CS) is a government-funded scheme that provides financial incentives to farmers, landowners and land managers to protect, restore and enhance their local environment.

The scheme is delivered through two tiers – mid and higher. The mid-tier scheme targets most farmers and landowners and the higher tier targets more high-priority areas for complex environmental management schemes.
