Project: Increasing Bio Net Gain at EMR Oldbury

Location: Oldbury, West Midlands

Date: February 2024

About

The Project

European Metal Recycling (EMR) is a global leader in metal recycling, operating sites across the UK. At their Oldbury site, EMR launched a rewilding initiative to improve biodiversity, tackle climate change, and enhance habitats for future generations. The project covers 3 hectares of land with the goal of increasing biodiversity by 95%.

Working with Glendale, a specialist grounds maintenance and landscaping contractor, the EMR team sought to transform previously rough and underused ground into thriving wildflower meadows and diverse habitats for local wildlife.

Our Contribution

What We Did

Green-tech supplied John Chambers Wildflower Seed, including the Heritage Dual Purpose mix and Impact Violet Heart 100% mix. Approximately 5kg of seed, comprising native and nectar-rich annuals and perennials, was sown over 1000m² in May 2023.

Cornfield annual species provided an immediate burst of colour during the first year, while slower-growing perennials are establishing for long-term impact from Spring 2024 onward. The site preparation involved clearing and cultivating the rough ground to create optimal conditions for seed establishment.

Additional biodiversity measures included planting 100 native saplings, trees, and species-rich hedgerows to enhance habitat, support wildlife, and absorb approximately 35 tonnes of carbon annually. The combination of wildflower meadows, trees, and hedgerows creates a resilient, visually appealing landscape while improving ecosystem services.

The Oldbury project successfully established vibrant wildflower areas and diverse habitats, increasing biodiversity by over 95%. Early visual impact was achieved with the annual species flowering quickly, and long-term success is expected from the perennial species.

“We used John Chambers as they have a reputation for being the best in the market for wildflower and grass seed. Delivery was very efficient and on time with the annual species making an appearance quickly. Overall, I am very happy and can’t wait to see the perennials come through in the spring.”
