Case study
Project: Coopers Field Wildflower Restoration
Location: Norfolk
Date: October 2022
About
Coopers Field, a 1.5-acre site in Norfolk, was purchased in late 2020 by landscape architect Jon, who recognised its potential to become a safe haven for wildlife and insects. The site was overgrown, with half of the area dominated by 1.2m-high brambles and the remaining half covered in scrub grass and scattered bramble growths.
The vision for the field was to transform it into vibrant wildflower meadows, enhancing biodiversity and providing visual impact through a combination of annual and perennial wildflowers.
Our Contribution
Extensive preparation was required to establish the meadow. The field was initially flail-cut, followed by careful clearing of bramble areas using a tractor with cultivator, creating three circular cultivated areas. Heavy bramble roots were removed and smaller regrowths managed with a mulching mower.
Over the next three months, debris was cleared, soil hoed, and metre-wide rows were laid out to calculate precise sowing rates. The site was then sown in Autumn 2021 with John Chambers Professional Dual Purpose 100% Wildflower Seed mix alongside dried sand as a carrier and selected single-species additions to enhance fullness.
The seed mix was chosen to balance immediate colour impact with long-term establishment. Cornfield annuals such as Poppy, Chamomile, Cornflower, Marigold, and Corncockle provided Year 1 flowering, while perennial species like Oxeye Daisy, Lady’s Bedstraw, Knapweed, and Salad Burnet established gradually for sustainable meadow growth from Year 2 onwards.
By early spring, seedlings emerged across the site. Annual flowers began blooming in June, with perennials like Wild Carrot and Yarrow following in July and August. Despite extremely dry and hot conditions in summer 2022, the meadow flourished, providing habitat for a wide range of wildlife and creating visually stunning, colourful displays.
The Coopers Field project demonstrates how careful planning, high-quality seed selection, and persistent cultivation can transform an overgrown site into a thriving, biodiverse meadow.
