Tussock Mix 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers – JC3558

A wildflower and tussock grass mix for creating tall, wildlife-rich habitats. Provides shelter for birds, mammals, and amphibians while enhancing biodiversity.

Tussock Mix 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers (JC3558) is a specialist wildflower and grass seed mixture designed to create structurally diverse tussock habitats. Combining 80% tussock-forming grasses with 20% taller native wildflowers, this mix establishes a species-rich sward that provides shelter and foraging habitat for small mammals, birds, and amphibians.

The grass component ensures sward structure and soil stability, while the wildflowers deliver seasonal colour, extended flowering periods, and ecological function. JC3558 is ideal for BNG delivery, meadow enhancement, conservation projects, estate management, and ecological mitigation schemes, creating valuable habitat mosaics within low-input landscapes.

This mixture is best sown into bare soil or alongside existing meadow swards, where it will develop tussocks and vertical structure over several seasons, supporting biodiversity and long-term ecological resilience.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Sow into bare soil or lightly prepared existing swards. Reduce vegetation height before sowing to improve seed-to-soil contact.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in spring or autumn when soil moisture is adequate.
  • Sowing Method: Broadcast evenly and lightly roll or tread to ensure good contact with soil.
  • Establishment: Grasses form tussocks quickly; wildflowers flower from year one with full structural complexity developing over 2–3 seasons.
  • Management: Use rotational or mosaic cutting to allow tussock development. Avoid frequent mowing.
  • Long-Term Care: Minimise fertiliser application and disturbance to maintain species diversity and habitat function.

Location overview Best suited to bare soil or low-input grassland sites, including field margins, existing meadows, conservation areas, and estate lands, where tall sward structure and ecological complexity are required.
Shade tolerance Prefers full sun to light shade. Best structural and flowering development occurs in open conditions.
Soil type Suitable for medium-textured to loamy soils, including well-drained or moderately moist sites.
Soil fertility Low to moderate fertility is ideal. High fertility can reduce wildflower diversity and tussock development.
Moisture Tolerates moderately moist soils and seasonal variation. Performs best on sites without persistent waterlogging.
