Tussock Mix 100% Wildflowers – JC

A native wildflower mix for creating structurally diverse tussock habitats. Ideal for oversowing into existing meadows to enhance biodiversity and habitat value.

Tussock Habitat Mix 100% Wildflowers (JC) is a structurally diverse native wildflower mixture designed to support tussock-style grassland habitats. This mix is intended to be oversown into existing wildflower meadows or species-rich grasslands, where it will help create varied sward height, increased structural complexity, and enhanced habitat value.

The species selection favours robust perennials and biennials that contribute to upright growth, seed heads, overwintering structure, and long flowering periods. Once established, the mix supports invertebrates, pollinators, small mammals, and farmland birds, making it highly suitable for BNG delivery, conservation schemes, estate land, and ecological mitigation projects.

JC9008 is particularly valuable where habitat heterogeneity, overwintering cover, and reduced mowing regimes are required as part of long-term biodiversity management.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Best oversown into existing wildflower or low-input grassland. Reduce sward height before sowing to expose soil.
  • Sowing Time: Sow in autumn or spring when soil moisture is reliable.
  • Sowing Method: Broadcast evenly and lightly roll or tread in to ensure seed-to-soil contact.
  • Establishment: Establishment may be gradual; structural benefits increase over 2–3 seasons.
  • Management: Cut on a rotational or mosaic basis. Avoid frequent mowing to allow tussock formation.
  • Long-Term Care: Remove arisings where possible and avoid fertiliser to maintain species diversity and structure.

Location overview Best suited to existing wildflower meadows, low-input grasslands, field margins, and conservation land where structural diversity and habitat complexity are desired. Suitable for both rural and large-scale landscape settings.
Shade tolerance Prefers full sun to light partial shade. Best structural development occurs in open conditions.
Soil type Adaptable to a range of medium-textured soils, including loams and moisture-retentive ground.
Soil fertility Low to moderate fertility is ideal. High fertility will reduce habitat value and species balance.
Moisture Performs best in moderately moist soils, with tolerance of seasonal variation once established.
