Selfheal Wildflower – JC2584

Low-growing purple-blue perennial wildflower for pollinator-friendly meadows, field margins, and ground-cover in ornamental borders.

Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) Wildflower (JC2584) is a low-growing perennial wildflower known for its clusters of purple-blue flowers and spreading habit. Highly attractive to pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, Selfheal provides ecological value while forming a resilient, ground-covering layer in meadows, field margins, and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Ideal for wildflower meadows, BNG schemes, parks, roadside verges, and ornamental borders, Selfheal establishes quickly and offers long-term flowering. Its compact growth habit makes it suitable for both ecological and ornamental planting schemes, supporting biodiversity and providing year-round interest.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Prepare a fine, firm seedbed free from weeds and competing vegetation. Ensure good seed-to-soil contact for optimal germination.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in spring or early autumn when soil moisture is consistent.
  • Sowing Rate: Broadcast evenly across the prepared area and lightly firm. Avoid burying seeds too deeply.
  • Establishment: Perennial species establish gradually, with flowering beginning in the first season and increasing in subsequent years.
  • Management: Cut once or twice annually depending on site objectives. Removing arisings helps maintain low fertility and encourages prolonged flowering.
  • Long-Term Care: Avoid fertilisers and minimise disturbance to support long-term flowering and biodiversity.
