Sandy Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers – JC9004

An 80/20 grass and wildflower mix for sandy, free-draining, low-fertility soils. Ideal for BNG, development, and long-term drought-tolerant meadows.

Sandy Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers (JC9004) is a robust seed mixture designed for sandy, low-fertility, free-draining soils prone to drought. Combining 80% fine, resilient grasses with 20% native wildflowers, this mix establishes a long-lasting, species-rich meadow that balances ecological value, aesthetic appeal, and soil stability.

The grass component includes Strong Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue, Hard Fescue, and Browntop Bent, selected for their ability to establish quickly, tolerate drought, and maintain sward structure on sandy soils. The wildflower component mirrors the proven JC8004 composition, providing seasonal colour, pollinator support, and biodiversity benefits.

JC9004 is ideal for development sites, parkland, field margins, heathland restoration, low-input meadows, and BNG delivery schemes, delivering a managed grass-led meadow with long-term ecological and visual benefits.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Prepare a fine, firm seedbed and remove perennial weeds prior to sowing.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in autumn or spring when soil moisture is adequate.
  • Sowing Rate: Broadcast evenly and lightly roll for good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Establishment: Grasses establish quickly to stabilise the sward; wildflowers will flower from year one and reach full meadow diversity over 2–3 seasons.
  • Management: Cut once or twice annually depending on objectives. Remove arisings to maintain low fertility and encourage wildflower persistence.
  • Long-Term Care: Avoid fertilisers and minimise disturbance to preserve botanical richness.

Location overview Best suited to open, sandy, free-draining soils, including heathlands, dunes, coastal areas, low-fertility grasslands, and urban brownfield sites. Performs well in rural and semi-urban locations.
Shade tolerance Prefers full sun to light partial shade. Reduced flowering may occur under dense shade.
Soil type Sandy, low-fertility, free-draining soils that are prone to drought.
Soil fertility Low fertility is ideal. Fertiliser or nutrient enrichment is not recommended, as it reduces wildflower diversity.
Moisture Tolerates dry conditions and thrives on well-drained sandy soils. Drought-tolerant once established.
