Poor Soils Mix 100% Wildflowers (JC4501) is a specialist blend of over 10 annual wildflower species, selected for their ability to thrive in low-fertility, free-draining, and drought-prone conditions.

Containing species such as Cosmos, Cornflower, Zinnia, Echium, Linum, and Layia, this mix delivers a vibrant display of colour from early summer through to autumn. Designed specifically for challenging environments, it performs particularly well on green roofs, banks, sandy soils, and dry landscape sites where conventional planting struggles.

Alongside its ornamental value, Poor Soils Mix provides an important nectar source for pollinators, helping to enhance biodiversity in exposed and low-input landscapes.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Minimal soil preparation is required. Remove existing vegetation and create a fine, firm surface. Avoid adding compost or fertiliser.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in spring once soil temperatures are consistently warm.
  • Sowing Rate: Broadcast evenly over the surface and lightly firm to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Establishment: This annual mix establishes quickly in low-nutrient substrates, producing reliable flowering in its first season.
  • Management: Minimal management required during the flowering period. Allow plants to flower fully to maximise colour and pollinator benefit.
  • Long-Term Care: As an annual mix, re-sowing is required each year. Avoid nutrient enrichment to maintain suitability for poor soils.

Location overview Ideal for exposed, open locations with full sun. Performs well in urban and rural environments where soils are shallow, dry, or nutrient-poor.
Shade tolerance Prefers full sun. Shaded conditions will significantly reduce flowering and plant vigour.
Soil type Free-draining soils including sandy, gravelly, and engineered green roof substrates.
Soil fertility Low fertility is essential. High nutrient levels will reduce flowering and species performance.
Moisture Highly tolerant of dry conditions once established. Avoid waterlogged soils, particularly on compacted or poorly drained sites.
