Common Knapweed Wildflower – JC1924

Perennial purple wildflower supporting pollinators. Ideal for meadows, field margins, BNG schemes, and ornamental borders.

Common Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) Wildflower (JC1924) is a versatile perennial wildflower, prized for its striking purple blooms and long flowering season. Highly attractive to pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, Common Knapweed enhances biodiversity and adds ecological value to meadows, field margins, and wildlife-friendly gardens.

This hardy species is ideal for permanent wildflower meadows, BNG schemes, parks, roadside verges, and garden borders. Once established, it provides multi-year flowering, supports pollinator populations, and contributes to species-rich, low-maintenance landscapes.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Prepare a fine, firm seedbed free from weeds and competing vegetation. Ensure good seed-to-soil contact for optimal germination.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in spring or early autumn when soil moisture is consistent.
  • Sowing Rate: Broadcast evenly over the prepared area and lightly firm. Avoid burying seeds deeply.
  • Establishment: Perennial species establish gradually, producing strong foliage and flowers in the first season, increasing in abundance over subsequent years.
  • Management: Cut once or twice annually depending on site objectives. Remove arisings to maintain low fertility and encourage flowering.
  • Long-Term Care: Avoid fertilisers and minimise disturbance to preserve species diversity and long-term flowering.
