Clay Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers – JC9000

A resilient 80/20 meadow mix for heavy clay soils, combining fine grasses with native wildflowers. Ideal for BNG delivery, development sites and long-term managed landscapes.

Clay Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers (JC9000) is a robust native meadow mixture designed for heavy clay soils with high water retention, combining long-term stability with meaningful biodiversity value. The mix comprises 80% carefully selected fine grasses and 20% native wildflowers, creating a durable yet species-rich sward suited to challenging soil conditions.

The grass component is based around Strong Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue, Hard Fescue and Browntop Bent, chosen for their ability to tolerate seasonal waterlogging, summer drying and moderate compaction while maintaining a fine, attractive structure. These grasses provide ground cover, weed suppression and resilience, making JC9000 particularly suitable for large-scale landscape schemes and managed grassland.

The wildflower element mirrors the proven composition of JC800 Clay Soils 100% Wildflowers, introducing colour, floral diversity and ecological function without compromising sward integrity. The result is a balanced, low-input meadow that establishes reliably, meets BNG objectives and performs consistently across development, agricultural and conservation sites.

JC9000 is ideal where a stable, grass-led meadow is required, such as infrastructure corridors, housing developments, public open space, attenuation basins, estates and farm stewardship land, particularly on sites where 100% wildflower mixes may be harder to manage long term.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Prepare a fine, firm seedbed. Alleviate compaction where possible and control perennial weeds prior to sowing.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in autumn or spring when soil moisture levels are favourable.
  • Sowing Rate: Broadcast evenly and lightly roll to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Establishment: Grasses will establish quickly to stabilise the sward. Wildflowers will begin flowering from year one, with increasing diversity over 2–3 seasons.
  • Management: Cut once or twice annually depending on scheme objectives. Remove arisings to reduce fertility and encourage wildflower persistence.
  • Long-Term Care: Avoid fertilisers and unnecessary disturbance. Ongoing low-input management will maintain species balance and biodiversity value.

Location overview Best suited to open sites on heavy clay soils, including low-lying land, floodplains and areas with fluctuating seasonal moisture. Performs well across urban, peri-urban and rural environments.
Shade tolerance Performs best in full sun, but tolerates light partial shade. Reduced wildflower abundance may occur in heavier shade.
Soil type Heavy clay soils, including compacted, moisture-retentive and seasonally wet clays.
Soil fertility Low to moderate fertility is ideal. The strong grass base helps cope with slightly elevated fertility, but enrichment should be avoided.
Moisture Tolerant of winter waterlogging and capable of withstanding summer dry periods once established.
