Calcareous Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers – JC9001

An 80/20 grass and wildflower mix for lime-rich, low-fertility soils. Ideal for BNG, development, and long-term managed meadows.

Calcareous Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers (JC9001) is a robust meadow seed mixture tailored for low-fertility, lime-rich soils (pH > 7). The mix combines 80% fine, durable grasses with 20% native wildflowers, producing a long-lasting, species-rich sward that balances aesthetic appeal, ecological function, and soil stability.

The grass component includes Strong Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue, Hard Fescue, and Browntop Bent, chosen for their tolerance of chalky soils, moderate drought, and seasonal dryness, while maintaining a fine, resilient structure. The wildflower component mirrors the proven JC8001 composition, providing colour, seasonal interest, and ecological value without compromising sward stability.

JC9001 is ideal for landscape architects, BNG schemes, developers, farmers, landowners, and conservation projects where a managed, grass-led meadow is preferred, including parkland, field margins, development sites, and restoration areas.

This mix offers rapid establishment, low-maintenance management, and long-term biodiversity benefits, providing a practical, ecologically valuable solution for lime-rich, low-fertility soils.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Prepare a firm, fine seedbed and remove perennial weeds to reduce competition.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in autumn or spring when soil moisture is adequate.
  • Sowing Rate: Broadcast evenly and lightly roll to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Establishment: Grasses will establish quickly to stabilise the sward, while wildflowers begin flowering from year one and reach full meadow diversity over 2–3 seasons.
  • Management: Cut once or twice annually depending on objectives. Remove arisings to maintain low soil fertility and encourage wildflower persistence.
  • Long-Term Care: Avoid fertilisers and minimise disturbance to preserve botanical richness.

Location overview Best suited to open, lime-rich soils such as chalk or limestone substrates. Performs well on low-fertility sites, rural grasslands, urban open spaces, and conservation areas.
Shade tolerance Prefers full sun but tolerates light partial shade. Flowering may reduce under denser shade conditions.
Soil type Low-fertility, calcareous soils (pH > 7), including chalk, limestone, and alkaline loams.
Soil fertility Designed for nutrient-poor soils. Fertiliser or enrichment is not recommended as it reduces wildflower diversity.
Moisture Tolerates moderate moisture but prefers well-drained soils. Avoid waterlogged conditions where possible.
