Acid Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers – JC9002

An 80/20 grass and wildflower mix for moderately acidic soils. Ideal for BNG, development, and long-term managed meadows.

Acid Soils 80/20 Meadow Wildflowers (JC9002) is a resilient seed mixture for moderately acidic soils (pH 4–5.5), combining 80% fine grasses with 20% native wildflowers. This mix establishes a durable, species-rich meadow that balances long-term ecological function, aesthetic appeal, and soil stability on challenging acidic soils.

The grass component includes Strong Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue, Hard Fescue, and Browntop Bent, chosen for their ability to tolerate acidic, low-fertility soils, moderate drought, and seasonal moisture fluctuations. The wildflower component mirrors the proven JC8002 composition, adding seasonal colour, pollinator value, and biodiversity benefits without compromising sward integrity.

JC9002 is ideal for development sites, parkland, field margins, restoration projects, and low-input meadows, providing a managed grass-led meadow that delivers both BNG objectives and long-term ecological resilience.

  • Seedbed Preparation: Prepare a firm, fine seedbed. Remove perennial weeds to reduce competition.
  • Sowing Time: Best sown in autumn or spring when soil moisture is reliable.
  • Sowing Rate: Broadcast evenly and lightly roll to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Establishment: Grasses will establish quickly to stabilise the sward, while wildflowers begin flowering in year one and reach full meadow diversity over 2–3 seasons.
  • Management: Cut once or twice annually depending on objectives. Remove arisings to maintain low soil fertility and encourage wildflower persistence.
  • Long-Term Care: Avoid fertilisers and minimise disturbance to maintain botanical richness.

Location overview Best suited to open sites with moderately acidic soils, including low-fertility grasslands, woodland edges, and heathland restoration areas. Performs well across rural and semi-urban acidic soils.
Shade tolerance Prefers full sun to light partial shade. Reduced flowering may occur in denser shade.
Soil type Moderately acidic soils (pH 4–5.5), including sandy, peaty, or acidic loams.
Soil fertility Low fertility is ideal. Fertiliser application is not recommended as it reduces wildflower diversity.
Moisture Tolerates moderate moisture, but prefers well-drained conditions. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
