Sowing the future: why wildflowers matter in England’s new Land Use Framework

England’s new Land Use Framework is all about balance. For the first time, we have national strategy that looks at land as more than just a space for farming or housing: it’s about growing food, building homes, tackling climate change, and giving nature a chance to thrive. The framework aims to fix fragmented land management and show that land can deliver multiple benefits at once.

Food security and sustainable agriculture
We’ve all heard about the tension between producing enough food and looking after the environment, but wildflowers are quietly solving both. By supporting pollinators and natural pest control, wildflower margins and cover crops can boost crop yields while enhancing biodiversity. As government environmental schemes expand, farmers and landowners will need more wildflower mixes than ever, creating new opportunities for sustainable agriculture and smarter land use.

Development and infrastructure
Green spaces are no longer an afterthought. The framework encourages smarter development planning, with biodiversity built into housing projects, transport corridors, and even energy sites. Wildflowers are perfect here; they’re resilient, low-maintenance, and loved by the public. In fact, 75% of people consulted want to see more urban wildflower meadows. From roadside verges to city parks, demand for hardy, attractive wildflower seed mixes are booming.

Environmental restoration and biodiversity
We’ve lost 97% of wildflower meadows since the 1930s. The framework pushes for large-scale habitat recovery, and that means complex, species-rich wildflower mixes are in high demand. With significant historic losses of wildflower-rich habitats, restoring meadows and grasslands is a national priority. These meadows don’t just look beautiful, they reconnect ecosystems, support pollinators and make landscapes more resilient.

Climate change
Wildflowers are climate heroes too. Wildflower habitats continue to contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation strategies through carbon sequestration, improving soil health and increased resilience to extreme weather events. As climate pressures grow, there will be a growing need for seed mixes that are both diverse and adaptable, capable of thriving under changing conditions while helping landowners meet sustainability targets.
What it comes down to: wildflowers are no longer just a pretty addition to the countryside; they’re essential players in England’s future land strategy.
