More than trees: The wildflowers that bring UK woodlands to life

Every year on 21 March, the International Day of Forests celebrates the vital role forests and woodlands play in supporting life on Earth. From storing carbon and improving air quality to providing habitats for wildlife, these landscapes are essential for both nature and people.

In the UK, woodland currently covers around 3.29 million hectares, roughly 14% of the total land area1. While that’s still lower than many European nations, our forests and woodlands remain incredibly valuable ecosystems that support a wide variety of plants, animals and pollinators. Beneath the towering trees, another world thrives. Woodland floors provide the perfect conditions for many of the UK’s most beloved wildflowers, particularly in early spring when sunlight reaches the ground before the tree canopy fully develops.

One of the most iconic sights in UK woodlands is the bluebell. These vibrant violet-blue flowers form spectacular carpets across ancient woodlands each spring, creating one of the UK’s most recognisable seasonal displays. Alongside them, wood anemones appear with their delicate white, star-shaped flowers, often among the first woodland plants to bloom after winter.

Another familiar woodland species is wild garlic, also known as ramsons. Its lush green leaves and clusters of small white flowers thrive in damp, shady areas and fill the air with a distinctive garlicky scent. These plants provide valuable nectar for pollinators emerging early in the season.

Woodland edges and clearings are also home to primroses, whose soft yellow flowers bring colour to shady banks, while foxgloves emerge later in the season, producing tall spires of pink and purple bell-shaped blooms that attract bees and other insects.

Wildflowers like these are more than just beautiful additions to our landscapes; they play a crucial role in keeping forest and woodland ecosystems thriving.

This International Day of Forests, take a moment to appreciate the quieter wonders of our forests and woodlands. The trees may dominate the skyline, but down on the woodland floor, the UK’s native wildflowers are putting on a spectacular display of their own.
