About

The Project

Three Hagges Wood-Meadow is a 10-hectare community woodland project located in York, North Yorkshire. Initiated in 2012, the site was converted from a 25-acre barley field into a thriving wood-meadow ecosystem, designed to support biodiversity, educational opportunities, and recreational activities for the local community.

The project is led by the Hagge Woods Trust, with Rosalind Forbes Adam serving as Chair and Lin Hawthorne as Project Manager and Designer. Their vision is to create woodland ecosystems that go beyond mass tree planting by carefully considering species selection, ground preparation, long-term management, and ecological restoration. The wood-meadow model aims to emulate one of the most diverse ecosystems in the northern temperate zone, ensuring a rich habitat for flora and fauna.

The site has been developed with the help of local volunteers, who have actively participated in planting and maintenance activities. Over the years, 10,000 native trees and 28 shrub species have been introduced, alongside specialized meadow sowings to encourage a diverse and sustainable plant community.

Our Contribution

What We Did

John Chambers Wildflower Seed contributed 2.5kg of bespoke native wildflower seed to support the creation of the meadow. The seed mix was carefully formulated to include a higher proportion of wildflowers and a wider variety of fine grasses than typical meadow mixes. This approach ensures a longer flowering season, slower and lower growth, and reduced maintenance over time.

Two lowland grass mixes were sown to cover wet and dry areas, establishing a diverse base for the meadow and woodland ecosystem. The onsite nursery, supported by Yorkshire-based company Bettys of Harrogate, raises new plants for phased planting, allowing for continuous development of the site and expansion of plant diversity.

The project focuses not only on planting but also on thoughtful, timely, and consistent management to ensure long-term ecological success. Each year, monitoring and adaptive management practices are applied to optimize plant establishment, pollinator attraction, and overall biodiversity.

Within three years, Three Hagges Wood-Meadow has transformed from an arable field into a thriving ecosystem with over 200 species of meadow flowers and grasses. The site has already attracted over 400 species of pollinators, demonstrating the rapid ecological success of the project.

The native wildflowers, including mallows, yarrow, betony, wild basil, trefoils, field scabious, yellow rattle, and campion, provide both aesthetic value and ecological function, supporting insects and other wildlife throughout the year. The meadow and woodland areas have become an educational resource and recreational space for local families, schoolchildren, and community groups.

“Our concept of a Hagge Wood involves the transformation of an arable field or other similarly limited habitat into a thriving woodland ecosystem. Planning, plant species selection, ground preparation and planting are only the first steps. Thoughtful, timely and consistent management are key to success and long-term monitoring will be the means of measuring it. To research and practise the ecological and holistic creation of new native woodlands, we have created our first experimental woodland at Three Hagges Wood-meadow. The project has received a strong endorsement from Jeff Lunn, formerly of Natural England, the government’s statutory adviser on nature conservation.”
