Project: Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area Advanced Infrastructure
Location: Glasgow, Scotland
Date: May 2022
About
The Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area (TRA) in Glasgow represents one of the city’s most ambitious urban renewal initiatives. Focused on replacing derelict high-rise housing with modern, sustainable living, the project has delivered 850 new homes, educational, community and retail facilities, and over 30 hectares of interconnected parkland.
The Advanced Infrastructure phase of the Sighthill TRA, costing approximately £65 million of the overall £250 million regeneration budget, was designed by LDA Design for Glasgow City Council and executed in collaboration with main contractor Morgan Sindall and landscape contractor Ashlea.
The project aimed to create a landscape-led regeneration with parkland, public realm spaces, sustainable drainage, and biodiverse planting, promoting wellbeing, climate resilience, and community connectivity through the ‘Civic Spine’ pedestrian and active travel route.
Our Contribution
Ashlea worked closely with Green-tech and John Chambers Wildflower Seed to bring the ambitious landscape designs to life over a three-year programme from July 2018 to October 2021. Key interventions included:
The wildflower and grass mixes were designed to create vibrant, biodiverse green spaces, complementing the extensive tree, shrub, and perennial planting, and supporting long-term ecosystem function.
Sustainability and net-zero goals underpinned the project, with site remediation and sustainable drainage freeing up developable land, and early economic studies demonstrating a return of £2.50 in the local economy for every £1 spent.
The Sighthill TRA Advanced Infrastructure project has been recognised with the 2021 Landscape Institute Excellence in Landscape Construction Award. The collaborative approach between LDA Design, Morgan Sindall, Ashlea, and Green-tech ensured exemplary results, balancing biodiversity, public amenity, and sustainable urban development.
The extensive planting, wildflower meadows, and sustainable parkland have created a destination area for residents and the wider community, enhancing health, wellbeing, and ecological resilience. Ashlea has committed to a five-year maintenance period to ensure the landscape remains vibrant and functional for the long term.
The project demonstrates how early engagement, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and high-quality products, including John Chambers Wildflower Seed, can transform large-scale urban regeneration schemes into award-winning, sustainable landscapes.
