Project: Ormesby Meadow Wildflower Restoration

Location: Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire

Date: October 2022

About

The Project

Ormesby Hall, garden, and parklands sit within a 240-acre green oasis in Middlesbrough, historically home to the Pennyman family and now cared for by the National Trust. Part of the estate, Ormesby Meadow, was a previously overgrown and largely unused field, essentially a wasteland in need of revitalisation.

The National Trust initiated a two-year project to transform the area into a nature-rich, biodiverse wildflower haven. Their vision was to enhance biodiversity while creating an attractive and educational green space that would thrive year after year, complementing the historic estate and parklands.

Our Contribution

What We Did

John Chambers Wildflower Seed worked closely with the National Trust team to develop a bespoke wildflower mix for Ormesby Meadow. The mix included nearly 30 species of wildflowers, combining perennial varieties with a small number of grasses and annual cornfield seeds to provide an immediate burst of colour in the first season.

Site preparation was essential to ensure successful establishment. The turf and top few inches of clay soil were removed to minimise competition from existing vegetation. Using turf-cutting machinery and a garden tractor, the team created four large, cultivated areas ready for sowing.

The bespoke seed mix was then evenly sown across the cultivated areas, hand-raked into the soil, and firmed with rollers attached to a ride-on mower. This careful approach maximised germination and long-term survival.

The perennial species in the mix were chosen to provide ongoing biodiversity and flowering diversity, while the annuals filled in early gaps to ensure vibrant colour in the meadow’s first season.

The wildflower meadow at Ormesby Meadow has exceeded expectations. Seasonal waves of different species now provide continuous colour throughout the year, attracting a wide range of insects and wildlife.

The project demonstrates how carefully planned meadow restoration, combined with high-quality wildflower seed, can transform neglected land into vibrant, ecologically valuable green spaces.

“We had an idea in mind for the wildflower meadow in this area and the advice from the John Chambers Wildflower Seed team really helped make that vision become a reality. The bespoke mix is perfect for what we needed; the meadows have been looking great. We had good late colour from the annuals and some perennials last year. It looked so good we waited until October to cut as there was still colour and lots of insects. This year has been great with waves of different species through the year. As well as all the diverse species, the highlights have been the ox-eye daisies and a sea of wild carrot. We are thrilled with the project and look forward to seeing how it all develops over the coming years.”
