About

The Project

Bishop’s Waltham in Bloom is a registered charity managed by a small group of trustees and supported by volunteers, all dedicated to planting and maintaining the village’s flower beds, tubs, and hanging baskets. Since 2016, the group has extended its work to incorporate two key wildflower areas: a 65m² roundabout and a 180m² open ground patch beside a road junction leading from the main road through the village.

The initiative was designed to enhance the visual appeal of the village while supporting local biodiversity, creating habitats for pollinators, and engaging the community in green spaces. The wildflower areas also complement existing floral and shrub planting, providing continuity and seasonal colour.

The project was made possible with support from the Waltham Society, BW Gardening Club, and a grant from Winchester City Council.

Our Contribution

What We Did

John Chambers Wildflower Seed supplied 500g of Follers Manor Annual Seed Mix for the two areas. This special mix of wild and cultivated annual species was originally developed for the award-winning gardens at Follers Manor in Sussex. It combines indigenous wildflowers that support wildlife with striking species such as Nigella, California poppies, and Coreopsis for vibrant, long-lasting colour.

The charity had previously experimented with various seed mixes and plug plants. While perennial mixes were tested to reduce yearly maintenance, species such as wild carrot tended to dominate, suppressing the annuals. The trustees therefore selected the Follers Manor mix for its balance of strong visual impact, biodiversity value, and suitability for small volunteer teams.

John Chambers Wildflower Seed has a 35-year history of supplying high-quality, hand-cleaned native seed for urban and rural projects across the UK. Each batch is carefully sourced from long-established growers to ensure optimum growth and successful establishment regardless of climate or soil conditions.

The wildflower areas at Bishop’s Waltham have produced vibrant, colourful displays that delight residents and visitors alike. The mix has performed well in both the roundabout and the larger open patch, providing seasonal interest while supporting a range of pollinators.

Susan Bircher, Trustee of Bishop’s Waltham in Bloom, commented:

“We initially experimented with different seed mixes and some plug plants, and found the annual-based mixes gave much more impact and colour. We did use some perennial mixes to try and reduce the yearly workload as we are only a small group, but that created a problem for us with species like wild carrot taking over and dominating the annuals in both areas.

Because of our initial experience we wanted to move back to a mix which gave us real impact for the enjoyment of local residents over a reasonable length of time. When researching options, I saw the John Chambers Follers Manor Wildflower mix and we decided the mix of indigenous wildflowers for wildlife plus the ‘extras’ of Nigella, California poppies and Coreopsis would give us the ‘best of both worlds’, and the photos on your website and the Follers Manor website looked very much what we hoped to achieve.

And it did. Very successfully. Lots of colour and variety, and we had a lot of very positive feedback.”

The project demonstrates how targeted seed selection, combined with volunteer enthusiasm and community engagement, can create low-maintenance wildflower areas that enhance village landscapes and biodiversity.
