Case study
Project: Ashtree Gardens Balancing Pond
Location: Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire
Date: August 2019
About
Modern residential developments are increasingly required to incorporate sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) that manage surface water responsibly while contributing positively to the surrounding landscape. One such solution is the creation of balancing ponds—also known as attenuation or retention ponds—which temporarily store excess surface water and release it gradually to reduce flood risk and protect local watercourses.
At the Ashtree Gardens development in the historic market town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Bellway Homes commissioned the construction of a new balancing pond as part of the site’s drainage and environmental strategy. Alongside its functional role, the pond was designed to form an attractive landscape feature for residents, enhancing visual appeal while supporting biodiversity.
To achieve these aims, Bellway Homes appointed PGE Landscaping Ltd, a professional landscaping, fencing and grounds maintenance contractor with extensive experience working within the construction sector across the Midlands and surrounding counties.
Our Contribution
PGE Landscaping Ltd was tasked with constructing the balancing pond and establishing appropriate vegetation around its perimeter to stabilise the banks, manage moisture levels and deliver an immediate visual uplift.
To meet these requirements, 1,000 square metres of John Chambers Wildflower Matting was specified and supplied. This innovative product provides an instant wildflower meadow, combining a carefully balanced mixture of native wildflowers and grasses grown within a moisture-retentive, biodegradable felt.
John Chambers Wildflower Matting is particularly well suited to applications around water features such as balancing ponds, swales and lake margins. The biodegradable mat helps suppress weeds, retain moisture and reduce soil erosion during the crucial establishment phase, while the embedded seed mix quickly establishes to create a stable and attractive sward.
Once installed, the matting delivers immediate structure and visual impact, with wildflowers and grasses continuing to develop and regenerate year after year. Made up of native species, the matting supports pollinators and other wildlife, helping to establish a resilient ecosystem that evolves naturally over time.
The product was supplied to specification and laid efficiently by the PGE Landscaping team, allowing the project to progress smoothly while delivering instant results for both client and end users.
The completed balancing pond at Ashtree Gardens successfully combines practical water management with strong landscape and biodiversity benefits. The wildflower matting established quickly, creating an attractive, natural-looking setting that enhances views across the development and provides year-round interest.
Feedback from both the contractor and the client has been extremely positive. The ease of installation, consistent quality and immediate visual impact of the John Chambers Wildflower Matting helped ensure the project met both functional and aesthetic objectives.
In addition to its visual appeal, the wildflower matting contributes to improved biodiversity by providing habitat for insects and birds, while its stabilising properties support long-term maintenance and erosion control around the pond margins. The project also demonstrates how thoughtful landscape specification can help residential developments deliver sustainable drainage solutions that benefit residents, wildlife and the wider environment.
